The Clydeside Distillery

The next spirit company I’ll discuss is the Clydeside Distillery, located along the historic River Clyde docks. I had the opportunity to visit last year for my tourism assignment, where the distillery generously offered us a complimentary tour. It was an engaging and insightful visit, and we even got to sample some drams!

The distillery prides itself in operating on the historic dock heritage in Glasgow. During the tour, they provide an immersive and interactive experience which takes consumers back to 1863 when the docks were first built. From there, we learnt about the whole of the whisky-making process and how the distillery got to where they are now! It was an amazing tour, and I would recommend trying this out when you are next in Glasgow.

Our group chose this distillery for our assignment because of its strong commitment to sustainability. They demonstrate a genuine passion for efficient operations and are actively pursuing a ‘Green Tourism Award.’ To achieve this, they implement various sustainable practices throughout the distillery. Their café features locally sourced menu items, reducing transportation needs and food miles. In the whisky-making process, they reuse maturation barrels about six times before selling them to beer makers or repurposing them as scrap wood, minimizing waste. Additionally, the leftover residue, known as draff, is used as cattle feed or converted into gas and electricity.

I highly recommend trying the café's food while you're there—it was perfect for soaking up some whisky after the tour! Plus, the shop has an entire section devoted to Islay whisky (not that I’m biased at all!). It always fills me with pride and comfort to know I’m lucky enough to call Islay home when I see the whisky and spirits produced by Islay distilleries.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into Clydeside Distillery. I found it was a fantastic visit, and I was inspired by their commitment to sustainability. It's truly exciting to see distilleries embracing a greener future!

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

The Glasgow Distillery

The first company I have chosen to research is the Glasgow Distillery, located in Hillington. Established in 2012, this distillery wanted to bring back the premium distillation of spirits within Glasgow. Their first product was released in 2014, the Makar Gin, Glasgow’s first-ever gin legally sold in restaurants and bars worldwide. In 2018, the distillery released its first single malt, Glasgow 1770. They went on to release numerous spirits including rum, vodka and many variations of whisky.           Even  if you are not a whisky lover (like myself), there are a range of flavours and ways to drink whisky that suit each palate. The Glasgow distillery uses this to its advantage by producing various types of spirits, such as peated and unpeated, blended whiskeys, and expressions for rum and vodka lovers .  The distillery production itself is very small, having only a team of 14 members producing this award-winning spirit. Unfortunately, unlike m...

Hunter Laing

The next spirit company I have chosen to write about is Hunter Laing. The company is based in Park Circus in the West End of Glasgow and are known for blending and bottling whisky worldwide.  The company is family-run, first founded by Fredrick Laing in 1949 and now owned by Stewart Laing and his two sons, Andrew and Scott. The Laing family has deep roots in the whisky industry, which has been pivotal in creating their brand today. What sets Hunter Laing apart is their focus on single-cask bottlings, allowing whisky lovers the chance to experience unique expressions from different regions, meaning each release can capture the individuality of the spirit from various distilleries.    The company opened their first distillery on Islay in 2019, Ardnahoe Distillery. More recently, this year, they released their first single malt from the distillery, the Ardnahoe 5-Year-Old. This is a huge milestone in the company’s journey and is a testament to the hard work put into the comp...
