The Glasgow Distillery

The first company I have chosen to research is the Glasgow Distillery, located in Hillington. Established in 2012, this distillery wanted to bring back the premium distillation of spirits within Glasgow. Their first product was released in 2014, the Makar Gin, Glasgow’s first-ever gin legally sold in restaurants and bars worldwide. In 2018, the distillery released its first single malt, Glasgow 1770. They went on to release numerous spirits including rum, vodka and many variations of whisky.

Even if you are not a whisky lover (like myself), there are a range of flavours and ways to drink whisky that suit each palate. The Glasgow distillery uses this to its advantage by producing various types of spirits, such as peated and unpeated, blended whiskeys, and expressions for rum and vodka lovers

The distillery production itself is very small, having only a team of 14 members producing this award-winning spirit. Unfortunately, unlike many distilleries, The Glasgow Distillery does not offer tours around the site as they do not have the facilities to do so.  I think having this would be unique for this distillery as it would offer insight to enable consumers to see how the spirits are produced. The distillery’s website features a detailed section on how these products are made, which is insightful for consumers who are interested in these processes.

Their website also offers a complete section of cocktails using each of their spirits. This provides a range of drinks that will appeal to individuals with differing needs in an alcoholic drink. Below I have included a recipe for one of my favourite cocktails:

 Espresso Martini

 Ingredients

-              50ml G52 Rich Coffee Vodka

-              50ml Espresso

-              25ml Coffee Liqueur

-              10ml Vanilla Syrup

Overall, I think this is an exciting distillery to bring to the busy scene of spirits in Glasgow. They provide a range of spirits that can cater to everyone and do so with the heart of the city as their main passion and motivation!

The Clydeside Distillery

The next spirit company I’ll discuss is the Clydeside Distillery, located along the historic River Clyde docks. I had the opportunity to visit last year for my tourism assignment, where the distillery generously offered us a complimentary tour. It was an engaging and insightful visit, and we even got to sample some drams!   The distillery prides itself in operating on the historic dock heritage in Glasgow. During the tour, they provide an immersive and interactive experience which takes consumers back to 1863 when the docks were first built. From there, we learnt about the whole of the whisky-making process and how the distillery got to where they are now! It was an amazing tour, and I would recommend trying this out when you are next in Glasgow.   Our group chose this distillery for our assignment because of its strong commitment to sustainability. They demonstrate a genuine passion for efficient operations and are actively pursuing a ‘Green Tourism Award.’ To achieve this, t...

Hunter Laing

The next spirit company I have chosen to write about is Hunter Laing. The company is based in Park Circus in the West End of Glasgow and are known for blending and bottling whisky worldwide.  The company is family-run, first founded by Fredrick Laing in 1949 and now owned by Stewart Laing and his two sons, Andrew and Scott. The Laing family has deep roots in the whisky industry, which has been pivotal in creating their brand today. What sets Hunter Laing apart is their focus on single-cask bottlings, allowing whisky lovers the chance to experience unique expressions from different regions, meaning each release can capture the individuality of the spirit from various distilleries.    The company opened their first distillery on Islay in 2019, Ardnahoe Distillery. More recently, this year, they released their first single malt from the distillery, the Ardnahoe 5-Year-Old. This is a huge milestone in the company’s journey and is a testament to the hard work put into the comp...
